Job Description

Mental Health & Disability Specialist

About the Role : This position is responsible for the facilitation of Mental Health and Disability Services. This position coordinates services for children who may present with Mental Health or Disability concerns. The position is responsible for developing and implementing mental health and disabilities programs, tracking and record keeping, community relations, and outreach. The position does not involve the provision of mental health diagnoses.

Responsibilities :

  • Assist students, families, and staff by modeling and utilizing the an SEL curriculum.
  • Assess for social and emotional concerns with an approved assessment within the first 45 days of the child's enrollment.
  • Review Brigance screening within 45 days of the child's enrollment to help connect students and families to developmental services.
  • Work closely with the Board of Education, Early Childhood Education Specialist, other Mental Health and Disability Specialist, Education Staff, and Family Service Workers to provide a team approach for all students who may have exceptionalities or identified needs.
  • Spend time weekly in stand-alone classrooms to observe, build rapport, and intervene as necessary.
  • Offers services to Board of Education classrooms.
  • Familiarize yourself with students who have or need an IEP.
  • Observe students via email, phone calls, or visits to ensure the child, parents, and education staff feel supported.
  • Provide coordination of services to support identified children in seeing a pediatrician, counselor, speech therapist, physical therapist, or occupational therapist.
  • Familiarize yourself with Child Licensing Regulations for stand-alone sites and classroom curricula.
  • Plans and aligns all classroom changes with the Early Childhood Education Specialist.

Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Social Work, or related field preferred.
  • Previous experience working in a mental health setting is advantageous.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Specialized training in supervisory skills, and expertise with preschool programs.

Other Requirements :

  • Obtain Basic First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Physical examination and provide a doctor statement as required by law.
  • Must be able to lift 30 lbs and occasionally heavier items.
  • Acceptable tuberculosis screening.
  • Criminal background check.
  • Mandatory Child Abuse Reporter training.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Computer skills.
