Job Description

About the Company:

A small, family-owned company with a history of over 100 years of success. The mission is to provide high-quality medical equipment and instruments used by scientists in neuroscience research. The products play a critical role in advancing scientific discovery and are highly respected for their precision and reliability. This is a tight-knit, low-turnover environment where employees thrive and grow alongside the company.

Position Overview:

Seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Engineer to join the team as the sole Mechanical Engineer. This individual will be responsible for designing mechanical components and systems for our medical instruments, which are used in cutting-edge scientific research. You will work directly with the scientist customers, collaborating throughout the design process to develop innovative, precise, and reliable solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

Design Work (70% of the role):

  • Lead the design and development of mechanical components for our medical instruments, ensuring high precision and reliability.
  • Utilize Solidworks (or other CAD software) to design intricate and precise parts, including machined and plastic components.
  • Work closely with scientists to understand their needs, translate those needs into detailed designs, and iterate based on feedback.
  • Develop prototypes and finalize designs for manufacturing.
  • Collaborate with external manufacturing teams to ensure designs are produced to specification.

Paperwork and Documentation (30% of the role):

  • Prepare detailed technical documentation, including drawings, specifications, and bill of materials (BOM).
  • Maintain thorough records of design revisions, prototypes, and manufacturing processes.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations for medical devices.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues and collaborate with cross-functional teams to find solutions.
  • Ensure the designs are within tight tolerances, maintaining the high standards of precision required for medical research equipment.

Qualifications:

Must-Have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, with a focus on designing intricate, high-precision products.
  • Proficiency in Solidworks or another CAD software (willingness to learn to Solidworks is acceptable).
  • Experience designing small, precise components, with a focus on motion control or linear motion control systems.
  • Knowledge of machining processes and designing parts with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
  • Ability to work independently and manage the design process from concept through to production.
  • Experience with Bill of Materials (BOM) creation and related paperwork.

Preferred:

  • Experience designing medical devices or instruments, particularly for research purposes.
  • Knowledge of product testing, qualification, and working with external manufacturers.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work with cross-functional teams and communicate with non-engineering staff (such as scientists).

Nice-to-Have:

  • Experience with linear motion control or related systems.
  • Prior work within industries such as medical devices, aerospace, automotive, or defense.

Ideal Candidate:

The ideal candidate is a motivated and technically strong engineer who is passionate about designing products that make a difference in the world of scientific research. This person will be comfortable working autonomously and enjoy collaborating with a small, close-knit team. They should have an interest in precision engineering and be eager to contribute to the development of innovative products that directly impact the neuroscience field. An individual who values a work-life balance and has hobbies outside of work will thrive in this environment.

How to Apply:

Please submit your resume and a portfolio of your work (if available) to be considered for this exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the medical device industry. We look forward to reviewing your qualifications!
