Salary:
$28.10/hour for applicants with less than 2 years of full-time law enforcement experience
$31.09/hour for applicants with 2 years or more of full-time law enforcement experience
Top annualized salary after 5 years: $76,731.20
Basic Function:
Participates in extensive field training and instruction in enforcing state laws, University, and departmental rules. Patrols University property on foot or in a vehicle, provides emergency and non-emergency services, conducts investigations, writes reports, controls traffic, and engages in community policing. Reports to Police Sergeant or Police Lieutenant.
Examples of Duties:
Patrols grounds and buildings, protects lives and property, and enforces laws and University rules.
Responds to calls for service and resolves conflicts within the campus community.
Carries firearms, apprehends violators, and transports prisoners.
Registers and books prisoners, detains individuals in need of treatment, and locates lost persons.
Conducts investigations, files affidavits, and serves warrants.
Provides community policing and assists with special events.
Monitors parking facilities, issues traffic tickets, and directs traffic.
Participates in surveillance and tactical operations.
Provides emergency medical services when needed.
Maintains department vehicles and performs administrative duties.
Receives Ohio Peace Officer basic training and completes reports.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent.
60 semester hours (or 90 quarter hours) of college-level academic credits in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, or a related field, or equivalent training/experience.
Must be 21 years of age at the time of commission.
Successful completion of an extensive applicant selection process, which may include: written assessment, background checks, physical exams, polygraph, physical fitness tests, psychological assessments, scenario-based assessment, hearing screening, controlled substance screening, and interviews.
License/Certification:
Valid driver's license with a safe driving record.
Eligible for acceptance at Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy.
Must complete the Ohio Peace Officers Training Program and an extensive Field Training Program during the one-year probationary period.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Interpersonal communication skills to interact with the public and authorities.
Written communication skills for report writing.
Physical fitness, basic math skills, and the ability to apply newly learned techniques.
Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:
Exposure to law enforcement hazards and variable weather conditions.
Extended periods of physical exertion may be required.
Varied hours and shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
On- and off-campus travel required for emergency situations.
Additional Information:
The process is expected to take approximately four months.
A valid driver's license with a safe driving record (no more than 6 points) is required at the time of appointment.
Applicants with felony convictions, violent offenses (excluding misdemeanor assault), or sexual offenses, or who provide false information, will be disqualified.
Must pass a security check.
