Forensic Accountant (Contract, Part-Time) – Family Law Spousal Support Case

Location: Remote (California-based case) – Torrance, CA court involvement possible

Engagement: Contractor, Part-Time (Flexible hours) – Immediate start

Duration: Until final deliverables due July 1, 2025

Project Overview

We are seeking an experienced Forensic Accountant to support a spousal support (alimony) modification case involving an owner-operated e-commerce company. The business has experienced a significant revenue decline, and the forensic accountant will analyze the company’s financials to clearly demonstrate the owner’s reduced income and financial constraints. This work will directly support legal counsel in preparing a compelling case for modifying spousal support obligations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Financial Analysis: Review and analyze company financial statements, revenue trends, cash flow reports, and debt obligations to document the revenue drop.
  • Investigative Accounting: Analyze the corporate structure and operations to ensure accurate accounting of all income and expenses; identify anomalies or gaps.
  • Reporting: Prepare professional, court-ready reports and exhibits that clearly summarize findings in a format suitable for legal proceedings.
  • Expert Collaboration: Work with legal counsel to translate financial findings into a narrative that supports a fair spousal support modification.
  • Testimony Support: Be available to explain and defend analysis as an expert witness via remote testimony or, if needed, in-person at the Torrance courthouse.

Ideal Candidate Profile (Qualifications)

  • Experience: Minimum 5+ years in forensic accounting, ideally in family law or litigation support. High-asset divorce or support modification case experience is highly preferred.
  • Financial Acumen: Skilled in reviewing complex financials and interpreting income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow data.
  • E-commerce Understanding: Familiarity with e-commerce businesses, owner-operated models, and layered corporate structures.
  • Reporting Skills: Ability to condense large data sets into concise, legally appropriate reports. Experience with court-ready financial exhibits is a plus.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written skills. Experience presenting findings or providing expert testimony preferred but not required.
  • Professionalism: High integrity, attention to detail, discretion, and self-driven work ethic. Must be comfortable meeting tight deadlines.
  • Credentials: CPA, CFF, or equivalent certification strongly preferred. Bachelor's or Master’s in Accounting or related field required.

Engagement Details

  • Start Date: Immediate. This is a time-sensitive case requiring prompt onboarding.
  • Hours & Schedule: Flexible part-time. Work can be done on your own schedule, with hours ramping up closer to the July 1 deadline.
  • Location: Fully remote with occasional virtual meetings. Ability to appear in-person at the Torrance, CA courthouse is a plus.
  • Compensation: Competitive hourly rate based on experience. This is a 1099 contractor role.
  • Flexibility: Open to professionals with full-time roles, provided they can commit to the necessary hours during evenings/weekends.
