POSITION SUMMARY  

The Diabetic Nurse Educator delivers quality care consistent within the scope of practice as outlined by the local state nurse practice act for Registered Nurses. The Diabetic Nurse Educator works in accordance with local practice acts and regulations, delegates and ensures supervision of nursing activities and functions to other competent nursing personnel appropriate to their scope of practice. The Diabetic Nurse Educator assumes responsibility and accountability for the quality of care delivered; works to ensure a safe environment for themselves, the patient and other staff members. The Diabetic Nurse Educator acts as a patient advocate to promote the quality of health care delivered in the facility and serves as a leader at all times to promote best practices within the profession of nursing. 

E SSENTIAL FUNCTIONS  

Will be required to work within a correctional facility. 

Maintain accurate, detailed reports and records. 

Administer medications to patients and monitor patients for reactions and side effects. 

Record patients’ medical information and vital signs. 

Monitor, record, and report symptoms or changes in patients’ condition. 

Consult and coordinate with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, or evaluate patient care plans. 

Modify patient treatment plans as indicated by patients’ responses and conditions. 

Monitor all aspects of patient care, including diet and physical activity. 

Direct or supervise less-skilled nursing or healthcare personnel or supervise a particular unit. 

Prepare patients for and assist with examinations or treatments. 

Instruct individuals, families, or other groups on topics such as health education, disease prevention, and childbirth as well as develop health improvement programs. 

Prepare rooms, sterile instruments, equipment, or supplies and ensure that stock of supplies is maintained. 

Coordinates and facilitates support groups for patients who have been diagnosed or are borderline with diabetes. 

Monitors adherence to diabetes-related treatment. 

Conducts medication noncompliance counseling. 

Orients, educates, mentors, and supports nursing staff. 

Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests to identify and assess patient’s condition. 

Attend training and meetings as required.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS, REGISTRATIONS AND EXPERIENCE  

Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of employment. A minimum of two years’ experience as an RN, preferred. Possesses an active CPR certification. Remains knowledgeable about specific state laws and regulations governing practice. Satisfactory completion of initial and annual clinical competencies to demonstrate aptitude as assigned by role. Must be a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) or able to obtain certification. o Have completed in the past two years or able to complete a minimum of 15 continuing education (CE) hours applicable to diabetes prior to taking the exam. o Have a minimum of 1,000 hours providing diabetes care and education within the past 5 years with a minimum of 200 of those hours being this year. 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS  

Must be fluent in English language, including reading, writing, speaking, and understanding. Must be a supportive team member who contributes to and demonstrates teamwork and team concept. Able to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action. Able to deal tactfully with personnel, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public. Possess leadership and supervisory ability and be able to work harmoniously with and supervise other personnel. Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace
