SEIU United Service Workers West (SEIU-USWW) represents over 45,000 property service workers across California. Our union brings together janitors, security officers, residential, stadium, arena and airport workers. Our mission is to lead the way to a more just and humane society; building power for all service workers by developing member leadership and activism, winning strong contracts, organizing unorganized service workers, building political and community power, and engaging in direct action that demonstrates our strength and determination to win.

POSITION SUMMARY & RESPONSIBILITIES: Working under the direction of the Organizing Director, this individual will be part of the External Organizing Department, which organizes non-union workers in California.

Examples of Duties:

  • Managing and leading teams of staff and members to carry out campaign plans.
  • Writing and implementing individual staff development plans.
  • Leading staff by example, setting high standards of performance and holding organizers accountable for results.
  • Creating and managing winning campaigns in coordination with the appropriate departments and union officers.
  • Developing campaign plans for multiple companies, regions, and staff teams.
  • Developing campaign messages and implementing plans with community allies.
  • Articulating a positive vision of the project and of the union.
  • Participating in creating the overall plan to move the union forward.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS: Graduation from an accredited college or university in relevant field or equivalent experience in labor & community organizing that would provide for the following knowledge of, skills & abilities.

  • Deep and demonstrated commitment to social justice
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in base-building organizing
  • Minimum 3 years experience leading and developing staff
  • Proficiency in building teams
  • Ability to be self-motivated and self-directed. Ability to thrive in a fast paced and diverse environment.
  • Proficiency in developing staff to conduct house visits, identify leaders, build committees and lead fights.
  • Ability to work long and irregular hours.
  • Must have a car and appropriate level of insurance (car allowance provided).
  • Proven commitment to social and economic justice and improving the lives of working people.
  • Experience working on campaigns with a labor union, public policy, or non-profit organization.
  • Knowledge of union organizing practice and principles.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in fast-paced and diverse team environment.
  • Ability to effectively plan and implement work and manage time, as part of a team and individually.
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly convey information and ideas both verbally and in writing across audiences.
  • Computer proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Gmail, social media platforms, database & teleconferencing.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to travel to other work sites in California, ability to work extended and irregular hours, and work offsite
  • Valid drivers’ license, use of a car for work, and specified automobile insurance coverage are mandatory
  • Physical Requirements
  • Bilingual English/Spanish (written & verbal) is highly preferred
