Job Description

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) in Toxicology performs complex testing on biological specimens to detect and quantify toxic substances, including drugs of abuse, therapeutic drugs, heavy metals, and other chemicals. The CLS ensures timely, accurate, and precise test results in compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards. This role involves analytical testing, quality control, instrument maintenance, and collaboration with medical staff to interpret findings.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and validate quantitative and qualitative toxicology tests using analytical instruments (GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, immunoassays).
  • Prepare and analyze specimens in accordance with established protocols and safety procedures.
  • Ensure accuracy and reliability of results through regular quality control procedures and proficiency testing.
  • Document test results accurately in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Calibrate and maintain laboratory instruments to ensure optimal performance.
  • Troubleshoot instrument or assay issues and assist with corrective actions.
  • Comply with CLIA, CAP, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation of all testing, maintenance, and quality assurance activities.
  • Participate in continuing education, training, and competency assessments.
  • Communicate effectively with physicians, toxicologists, and other healthcare professionals regarding test interpretations and results.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Valid Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license issued by the state of California.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry, or related field.
  • 1–2 years of experience in a clinical laboratory (toxicology experience preferred).

Preferred:

  • Experience with mass spectrometry (e.g., LC-MS/MS, GC-MS).
  • Familiarity with drug screening panels and confirmation methods.
  • Certification from ASCP or equivalent.
  • Experience with Agilent equipment.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work under pressure.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in laboratory software and instrumentation.
