Job Description

The Wallkill Public Library is looking for a Children’s Services Coordinator. This position is 32 hours per week and requires two Saturday per month. The ideal candidate would have a Bachelor’s degree, and/ or have experience with children of all ages in a library or education environment and enjoy working with the public. Familiarity with children’s literature is important to be successful in this position. Responsibilities include planning and implementing children’s programs, helping with patron inquiries and collection development under the general supervision of the Library Director.

We are looking for a person who enjoys working with children and their parents/caregivers, who is flexible and works well with others. Computer, social media communication skills and a willingness to learn are essential.

Under the direct supervision of the Library Director, the Children’s Services Coordinator is responsible for:

Programming:

· Design, develop, implement, and evaluate a variety of programs and services for children, including book clubs, educational workshops, recreational activities, and cultural events

· Collaborate with community organizations, schools, and other stakeholders to develop partnerships and co-sponsor events

· Active participation in events and programs, including setting up/cleaning up rooms and arranging materials

Collection Management:

· Select, acquire, and manage library materials for parts of the children’s collections, ensuring a diverse and relevant selection that meets the community's needs

· Conduct regular assessments and weeding of the collections to maintain current, popular resources, as well as classics

· Stay informed about current trends and best practices in library services and literature for children

Patron Services:

· Assist patrons at the service desk, including checking out materials, placing holds, providing information, and reader's advisory services

· Assist patrons with the use of library resources, including electronic databases, e-books, and other digital tools

· Handle patron concerns and feedback, ensuring a positive and inclusive library experience

Outreach and Community Engagement:

· Assist in maintaining the library’s social media presence and work with the Library Director and Circulation Supervisor to promote all library programs on Facebook and Instagram, in the monthly e-newsletter, and on the website

· Conduct outreach activities to promote library services and programs to children in the community

· Develop and maintain relationships with the local schools, community organizations, and other partners

· Represent the library at community events, meetings, and other public engagements

Administrative Duties:

· Work with the Library Director and Bookkeeper to prudently manage budgets for children’s programs and collections

· Prepare reports and maintain records related to program attendance, and other relevant statistics to be provided to the Library Director

· Together with the Circulation Supervisor and Library Director, design and prepare content for the monthly electronic newsletter using Constant Contact

· In concert with the Library Director identify and apply for grants to enhance materials, programs, and services to children

· Other duties as assigned

Professional Development:

· Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with trends and advancements in library services and programming

· Attend workshops, and other training sessions as required

Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in Education, Library Science, English, Communications or closely related field from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university and one (1) or more years of experience in a library setting or performing duties related to the supervision, coordination and administration of children’s programs,

OR

Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s Degree in Education, Library Science, English or Communications or closely related field, and three (3) or more years of experience in a library setting or performing duties related to the supervision, coordination and administration of children’s programs.

Other Recommended Skills include:

· Strong organizational and project management skills

· Excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills

· Proficiency with Microsoft Office, social media, technology, and Canva for program marketing, promotion, and community engagement

· Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment

· Creative thinking, initiative, and problem-solving abilities

The pay range is between $17 to $19.50 per hour. New York State 457(b) deferred compensation retirement plan is available.
