Assistant City Attorney

Dallas City Attorney’s Office – Criminal Law & Police Liaison Section

The Dallas City Attorney’s Office is seeking an energetic, self-motivated attorney with at least two years of experience, including experience in Texas municipal or state criminal courts, to fill a full-time position in the General Counsel Division of the Dallas City Attorney’s Office.

The successful candidate will provide advice and counsel to the Dallas Police Department and will draft legal opinions, correspondence and police training bulletins; prepare pleadings; review and respond to subpoenas and open records requests; review and respond to expunction petitions and orders; and regular training to police recruits on constitutional and criminal laws. The successful candidate will also attend hearings in municipal court and state civil and criminal courts and occasionally attend public safety committee meetings. Other duties may be assigned.

Candidates must be licensed to practice law in Texas and be in good standing with the State Bar of Texas. The successful candidate must pass a criminal background check for Criminal Justice Information Services certification. Candidates should be proficient in legal research and writing, communicate effectively, and possess the ability to work efficiently and collaboratively in an office environment.

Salary is commensurate with experience. The city’s comprehensive benefits package comes with the position. This position is exempt from the provisions applicable to civil service, pursuant to Chapter XVI, Section 9 of the Dallas City Charter.
